Airports
THE CHALLENGE:
LAX Airport is owned and operated by Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA). It is the 5 th busiest airport by passenger traffic in the world, serving over 80 million passengers each year. Over 2 million tons of freight and mail passes thru LAX each year. Air quality around LA and at LAX reached record-breaking poor conditions in 2018. Carbon filtration can only do so much. By adding an air purification strategy, fumes from jet fuel, PMs from GSE and VOCs and other contaminants can be reduced.
THE SOLUTION
AtmosAir proposed a comprehensive solution- four hundred 508FCs have been installed in over 200 AHUs in the nine passenger terminals. By delivering bi-polar ions directly into the supply air of every AHU, 508FC boosts air purification capabilities to provide cleaner, fresher, healthier air.
THE RESULT:
AtmosAir bipolar ionization systems delivered:
– Reduced odors
– Reduced VOCs (targeting hydrocarbons)
– Reduced bacteria, viruses and mold
– Reduced particulate contamination
LAWA recorded 90% reduction in odor causing gasses and VOCs. Indoor air in food court areas also saw significant improvement. The maintenance team reduced the size of carbon filters lowering costs and waste generated. LAWA projects annual energy savings of $2000/AHU.
“We’ve reduced our dependence on carbon filtration, using smaller filters requiring less maintenance, and have improved the customer experience in the terminals. We have far fewer odor complaints.”
– Rich Yakel, Manager, Los Angeles World Airports, HVAC and maintenance.

Project Abstract
AtmosAir installed bipolar ionization technology on a trial basis in the locker room area, and after successful testing, throughout the entire training facility. Dallas wanted a reduction in airborne allergens and dangerous bacteria such as Staph and MRSA.
Results
Trainers, staff and players — unaware of the AtmosAir system installation — commented on improved air quality. Trainers distributed fewer medicines for hay fever and allergy symptoms. No MRSA or H1N1 Flu has been reported since system installation. In addition, energy savings from AtmosAir’s bipolar ionization technology were enough to recover system installation cost.
AEG is the world’s largest sports and live entertainment company, and owners of the Staples Center. The Staple’s Center is the world’s most frequented arena and home to the LA Lakers as well as the LA Clippers. As part of its 1 Earth mission, AEGmanagement sought to reduce the company’s environmental impact while driving business value through sustainability.
Testing & Results
Project Abstract
AtmosAir™ and independent laboratory EMSL tested the air quality in Staples Center’s Lexus Club, a private dining room located inside the Staples Center. AEG/Staples Center engineering wanted a baseline measurement of contaminant levels with the air handling and filter systems operating as installed, and later with AtmosAir™ bipolar ionization systems working in the same air space, using reduced outside air.
After a successful test in the Lexus Club, the Staples Center engineering team wanted to determine if AtmosAir™ systems generated an electrical energy savings when installed in a large arena.
Testing
The AEG Facilities engineering team ran a fluke power monitor connected to air handler #6 in a “before and after” test. Weather conditions were identical.
The “before” test was a 48-hour test with AtmosAir air purification systems installed and operating. AEG locked the outside dampers and left only pre-filters installed.
The “after” test was a 48-hour test beginning immediately after the AtmosAir air purification “before” test. Bag and pre-filters were installed and the outside air dampers were returned to normal, automatic operation.
Results
After a successful testin the Lexus Club, a 30,000 square foot private dining area located inside the Staples Center, AtmosAirsystemswere installed throughout the arena. As a result, the need for outside air (fresh air) was reduced by 62%, resulting in a projected annual savings of $213,776. Apart from the significant energy savings, air quality, especially gaseous elements, VOCs and TVOC, improved tremendously:
- Energy Savings : 21%
- VOC reduction : 90%
- PM 10 Reduction : 25%
Trainers, staff and players — unaware of the AtmosAir system installation — commented on improved air quality. Trainers distributed fewer medicines for hay fever and allergy symptoms. No MRSA or H1N1 Flu has been reported since system installation. In addition, energy savings from AtmosAir’s bipolar ionization technology were enough to recover system installation cost.
